About the Montreal Underground City

Officially known as RÉSO, this massive 32-kilometer pedestrian network runs above and below ground in downtown Montreal. It seamlessly connects shopping malls, hotels, museums, universities, and metro stations. The first tunnel was constructed in 1962 to link Place Ville Marie to Central Station.

Today, the climate-controlled urban district serves approximately 500,000 people daily. It provides shelter and convenience, especially during harsh Canadian winters. The network covers an operational area of more than 12 square kilometers.

Navigating the tunnels can be confusing for first-time visitors. Read our guide on the Best Entry Points or consider booking a Guided Tour Pros to get your bearings.

Misha was a fabulous Tour guide! Her knowledge of the underground tunnels, shops, art, and metro exceeded our expectations. I would recommend this tour to a first time traveler to Montreal or a fifth time traveler.

Best ever. This lady was energetic and knew everything about the history, the whys, from the past and where it is going in the future. The project is truly one of a kind. I believe Katherine was her name.

This was a fun way to spend the morning! Goofy was an engaging guide who gave us a peek into the tunnels that connect the city in ways we never would have realized. It was super helpful to understand how the subway/train systems work and his recommendations along the way were great! We appreciated his willingness to answer our questions and share his knowledge about Montreal. Thanks Goofy!
